Gum disease is the collective term for a number of periodontal diseases. The condition of the mouth often reflects the condition of the body as a whole. In fact most systemic diseases have oral manifestations, so having good oral hygiene helps the body’s natural defences.
Unfortunately because it is painless, gum disease is often ignored until serious damage has been caused. You may recognise the term gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gum tissue. Periodontitis, the advanced stage of gingivitis, is the major cause of adult tooth loss.
Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, being over 65 years of age or a smoker increases the risk of gum disease.
Symptoms to look out for include:
- Bleeding gums
- Hot and cold sensitivity
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Metallic taste
- Swollen, purple and/or painful gums
- Yellow plaque build-up on the gum line
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Loose adult teeth
